Bred at Wye College and introduced in 1972, Challenger is a granddaughter of Northern Brewer and niece of Northdown. It is a versatile variety with wide application in both early and late kettle additions.
Smooth and pleasant as a late addition, Challenger's moderate Alpha Acid content allows it to be used as a bittering hop, as well as for imparting flavour and aroma. Alone or in combination with traditional British hops such as Fuggle's or Golding's, Challenger can be used for any British, Irish, or Scottish styles.
While English Challengers can have a marmalade-like character, the US grown variety leans more towards spicy.
